Digi Unveils All-New Postpaid Plan Lineup For 2021: Now Starts At RM 40 Per Month

$

0

Digi today has unveiled its new Postpaid plan lineup that has been revamped for 2021. For starters, it now has a much lower starting price at RM 40 per month instead of RM 80 as per last year.

In addition to that, the telco has also simplified the data quota for Digi Postpaid into a universal data pool that users can utilise for their smartphone as well as hotspot tethering. Each of these plans still features unlimited calls just like the Digi Postpaid plans from 2020.

The telco also stated that it is looking into providing value for Digi Postpaid by offering free and paid add-on options that could cater to individual needs. Depending on specific add-ons, users can opt to add more data quota or even unlimited data as well as rebates for paid contents from Google Play, iOS App Store, and Digi’s Easy Add store.

Users can even choose to have Roam Like Home and Digi Mobile Broadband as add-on options for their Digi Postpaid plan. However, do note that regardless of free or paid add-on options, each of them do come with a 12-month contract.

Outside of these add-ons, Digi has also retained the standard Internet passes for those who need to replenish their data pool on the spot. As noted in one of the slides above, each principle Digi Postpaid plan can support up to six additional Digi Family supplementary lines which are currently being offered at half of their usual monthly price.

That being said though, the Digi Family 60 can only be obtained with Digi Postpaid 60 and above while you need to subscribe to at least Digi Postpaid 90 first before you can sign up for Digi Family 90. For users that have more than one device, they can share their Digi Postpaid data quota to their secondary device by obtaining the Gadget SIM which cost RM 10 per month, instead of getting a separate data account for it.

Through the revamp, the telco is also trying to put Digi Postpaid plan as the centre of customers’ universe by offering them rebates to other Digi products including Digi Fibre and Mobile Broadband services. However, these rebates are only available to Digi Postpaid 60 plan and above.

Existing Digi Postpaid customers don’t have to be worried about having to take up these new plans immediately as Digi’s Chief Marketing Officer Praveen Rajan has stated that customers will not be migrated automatically and they are free to remain with their existing plans. For more details, just head on to Digi’s official website right here.

U Mobile, unifi, and Digi Made Their Way To The World’s Most Improved Telco List by Opensignal

Opensignal this week published the second edition of its Global Mobile Network Experience Awards which is based on the data from the second half of 2020. Just like the inaugural edition of the awards last year, U Mobile has been deemed as one of the world’s most improved telcos although this time around, unifi Mobile and Digi are also part of the list.

The list which is called the Opensignal’s Global Rising Stars in general highlights the top 30 most improved telcos throughout the globe. In the latest edition, it is based on the differences in their performances during the second half of 2020 and 2019 across five categories.

The red boxes are Malaysian telcos.

U Mobile’s name is listed in four of these categories including Video Experience, Download Speed Experience, 4G Availability, and Voice App Experience. Opensignal stated that the improvement rates that the telco managed to achieve in these categories are 36.6%, 44.7%, 11.7%, and 3.7%, respectively.

On another hand, unifi Mobile is being listed in the Video Experience and Download Speed Experience categories as well. The TM’s cellular arm apparently managed to increase its video capability by 13.1% while its customers have apparently experienced an improvement of 27.6% when it comes to downloading speed.

TM 5G base station Langkawi

Meanwhile, Digi made it to the list as one of Opensignal’s Upload Speed Experience Rising Stars. This is due to the telco’s improvement rate of 26.8% which is more than double the average global rate for this particular category.

As mentioned earlier, the Opensignal Global Rising Stars list is based on improvement rates and not performance numbers. In other words, while the listing showed that these Malaysia telcos have been working to improve their services which is a good thing, users still need to manage their expectations as on-ground experience may vary from one person to another.

Furthermore, we don’t think that just being listed in Global Rising Stars is enough though. All local telcos certainly need to continuously improve themselves to the point that they are good enough to join the Global Leaders list, if not the Global Winner award itself.

Celcom, Digi, and Maxis Finalise Their New 20-Year Fibre Infrastructure Agreement

Back in February 2020, Celcom, Digi, and Maxis had announced their intention to jointly roll out fibre infrastructure throughout the country. Fast forward to a year later, the three telcos have finally confirmed that they are moving forward with the plan.

According to the joint announcement released yesterday, one of the main elements within the new agreement is that Celcom, Digi, and Maxis will be working together to design, build, operate, and maintain related fibre infrastructure all over Malaysia. For current infrastructure, the new agreement will apparently increase the amount of shared fibre as well as mutual infrastructure swapping arrangements.

Another element that makes this new agreement rather significant is the fact that it involves a duration of 20 years. Additionally, the three telcos also welcome other operators to come in and tap into the additional network capacity that will be generated through this new infrastructure sharing deal.

Meanwhile, the three telcos believe that the new agreement can help accelerate the fibre backhaul deployments to base stations. At the same time, it may also increase the efficiency of the deployments too, since another major objective of the cooperation is to lessen the amount of duplicated fibre infrastructure.

In terms of benefits for consumers, the message is generally identical to what the three telcos have stated last year: improving the coverage and quality of 4G connectivity as well as bringing more fibre to users and prepping up the country for 5G.

However, the backdrop has significantly changed since then as there is now something called Jalinan Digital Negara (JENDELA). Not to forget, the government has also backpedaled on its 5G rollout timeline and decided to bring the implementation forward much earlier via MyDIGITAL initiative.

In many ways, the finalisation of the new fibre infrastructure arrangements between the three largest mobile players in the country came at the right time and we certainly hope that consumers will be able to experience the positive impact of this new deal very soon.

UPDATE (1:53 PM): Axiata and Telenor Asia have officially unveiled their plan to merge Celcom and Digi. Check out our report here for further details

ORIGINAL STORY (11:05 AM):

Axiata and Digi earlier today have suspended their trading activities on Bursa Malaysia. Both companies provided the same “pending the release of a material announcement” reason for the temporary suspension.

Hence, this immediately ignited speculations that both companies may jointly announce their merger plan today. Axiata and Telenor (Digi’s parent company) have actually embarked on this journey back in May 2019 which would lead to the merger of Celcom and Digi to form the biggest telco in the country.

However, the merger was then called off in September of the same year. But just a few months later in January 2020, The Star reported that the merger talk is back once again although the rumour was then brushed off by Jamaluddin Ibrahim who was the Chairman and Group CEO of Axiata at that time.

Axiata has since scheduled a media briefing that will take place later this afternoon. We will keep you updated on its progress, so stay tuned.

Celcom and Digi To Merge Into A Single Company; Will Continue As Different Brands

Axiata and Telenor Asia have officially revealed that they are now in advanced talks to merge their telco operations, Celcom and Digi into one entity. The joint announcement has confirmed the speculations that were sparked by the temporary suspension of Axiata and Digi share trading on Bursa Malaysia earlier today.

The merged company will be officially called Celcom Digi Berhad but both Celcom and Digi will continue to be two different telco brands in the market. There will be no effect on existing MVNOs arrangements for both companies as well.

That being said, the current CEO of Celcom, Idham Nawawi has been nominated as the CEO for the newly merged company while Digi’s CEO, Albern Murty will become its Deputy CEO.

In terms of ownership, Axiata and Telenor will each own 33.1% of the new entity which means that they will control the Celcom Digi Berhad together. The rest of the shares will be owned by other local institutional funds such as EPF, PNB, and KWAP as well as the public.

Axiata and Telenor have also guaranteed that there is no plan to cut jobs or perform forced retrenchments on the existing staff at Celcom and Digi. However, those that have overlapping positions will be offered new roles or retraining and upskilling opportunities which are related to the establishment of the new Innovation Centre that was revealed in today’s announcement.

Nevertheless, Axiata and Telenor also didn’t discount the possibility of a Voluntary Separation Scheme being offered to the employees of both telcos.

Izzadin Idris, the President & Group CEO of Axiata pointed out today’s announcement does not involve a binding agreement and there is still a lot of work to be done in order to finalize the merger. Additionally, the merger is also still subjected to approvals from the regulators and shareholders of respective companies.

Nevertheless, the definitive agreement is expected to be ready within the second quarter of 2021. Both parties also seemed to be confident that the merger will really take place this around as opposed to what has happened back in 2019.

Digi is extending its offer of 1GB free Internet per day – essentially 30GB per month – until 31 July 2021. However, the free data will only apply to productivity activities like home-based e-learning and remote working.

For social media, gaming, video and music streaming, you’ll be using data from your existing data plan. Still, the free “productivity” Internet is available to all active Digi Postpaid and Prepaid customers, who can enjoy the extra data over and above their usual allocation.

Digi said it will also continue to give free and unlimited access to a number of COVID-19 related and informational apps, websites, and services. This includes the MySejahtera app, the National Crisis Preparedness Response Centre (CPRC) Hotline, the Ministry of Health’s page and World Health Organization’s websites.

Also, Digi said it will be offering RM5 worth of Internet prepaid credit or postpaid bill rebate to eligible recipients of the Bantuan Prihatin Rakyat (BPR) programme. To take advantage of this, eligible BPR recipients should send “BPR” to 28282 to register their interest for the RM5 internet credit or rebate. They will get an SMS notification upon successful verification.

Digi Faces Network Disruption Throughout The Country (UPDATED)

UPDATE (11:35 PM): Digi has released a statement to address the network issue that the telco faced today. Read more for further details.

ORIGINAL STORY (10:20 PM):

Numerous Digi customers throughout the country have reported network disruption in their areas. As the telco has yet to make any specific announcement regarding it, the nature of disruption is unclear at the moment.

That being said, our observations through Twitter showed the majority of customers that had posted about the disruption stated that their Digi connection suddenly went out of service without any warning. Further search through Twitter also showed that the disruptions may have started sometime before 7:45 PM.

The only acknowledgement from the telco regarding the service disruption is the above reply from its customer service agents. At the time this article was published, the customer service reps remain busy responding to disgruntled customers which only mean that this round of disruption has been going on for more than 2 hours.

We are now reaching out to Digi for further clarification and will keep you posted once we hear more from the telco.

UPDATE (11:35 PM):

Digi has released an official statement in regards to the network disruption experienced by its customers throughout the country:

We wish to inform that at approximately 7:30pm today, we were alerted of some network issues which had caused intermittent data service disruptions.

Our 24-Hour Response Team worked promptly to identify and resolve the issues, resulting in service recovery within slightly more than one hour.

We humbly apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused, and thank them for their patience and understanding.

The timeframe mentioned in the statement above seemed rather off though as Digi’s customer service agents were still talking about technical difficulties way after 10:00 PM. By right, the rectification should have happened much earlier.

Nevertheless, Digi customers out there may want to restart their devices and verify if the service has returned back to normal.

Celcom and Digi Merger Goes Official: To Be Completed By Q2 2022

$

Axiata, Telenor Asia, and Digi have officially signed the agreement to merge Celcom and Digi into a single company. Today’s revelation is a follow up to the announcement that Axiata and Telenor have made back in April.

However, the completion of the merger is still subjected to approvals from the shareholders of Axiata and Telenor as well as other related elements including regulatory approvals. Nevertheless, they expect that the merger will be completed by the second quarter of 2022.

In general, the announcement is meant to inform everyone that the merger is now happening for real while the majority of the details had been revealed back in April. For example, Axiata and Telenor will have equal shares of 33.1% each in the merged company which will be called Celcom Digi Berhad.

Once the merger is completed, Axiata will also receive RM 2 billion of cash consideration with RM 1.7 billion of the amount to come from Digi as debt in the new merged company while another RM 300 million will come from Telenor. The same goes for the top management team of the new company which will still follow the arrangement that was announced back in April:

Axiata and Telenor once again insist that there will be no forced retrenchments although previously, they did not discount the possibility of offering the Voluntary Separation Scheme option to the employees of both telcos. The merged company has also planned to build an Innovation Centre in Kuala Lumpur for R&D, 5G use cases, and digital startups through a total investment of up to RM 250 million over a period of five years.

The statement didn’t highlight this but back in April, both companies pointed out that Celcom and Digi would continue to be in the market as two different brands. It goes without saying that everyone is eager to know the real impact of this merger on the customers of both telcos but that is something that we will likely only be able to see once the deal is completed next year.

UPDATE 2 (16 Aug / 10:51 PM): Samsung Malaysia has officially revealed the pricing of Galaxy Z Flip3 and Z Fold3, as well as Galaxy Watch4 Series and Galaxy Buds2. All of them will be available for pre-order on 19 August.

UPDATE 1 (15 Aug / 5:30 PM): A Lowyat.NET Forumer has found the pricing for both devices on Samsung Malaysia’s website as well. Scroll further for more details.

ORIGINAL STORY (14 Aug / 11:58 PM):

During the Galaxy Unpacked August 2021 event earlier this week, Samsung has unveiled two new foldables in the form of Galaxy Z Flip3 and Z Fold3. While the company has yet to reveal their availability in our market, we believe we may have stumbled upon their local pricing.

Over the years, we would visit Celcom, Digi, Maxis, and U Mobile’s websites whenever there is a significant smartphone launch by major brands including Samsung to search for information regarding local releases. The majority of the time we couldn’t find anything though until the brands themselves revealed such information to the public.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 and Galaxy Z Flip3 in folded mode.

But it looks like things are different for the newly announced foldables. By using “Galaxy Z” as the search keyword on Digi’s website earlier today, to our surprise, the result that we received includes both devices.

According to the listing on Digi’s website, the retail price of Z Flip3 with 256GB internal storage is RM4,199. On another hand, the Z Fold3 256GB is listed as RM6,699 while the 512GB variant goes for RM7,199.

All these screenshots were captured on Digi’s website at 11:51 PM today.

As a comparison, the starting price of Z Flip3 in the United States is US$999.99 (~RM4,238) but that is for the 128GB model. Over there, the 256GB variant of the phone goes for US$1049.99 (~RM4,450) which is noticeably higher than Malaysia.

This also applies to the Z Fold3 as well since the US pricing for the 256GB model is US$1799.99 (~RM7,628) while the 512GB unit is available for US$1899.99 (~RM8,052). Additionally, the launch price of the original Z Flip and Z Fold2 in Malaysia were RM5,888 and RM7,999 respectively, if you want to take their predecessors into consideration.

Of course, we still have to wait for the official announcement from Samsung Malaysia itself regarding the price tag for Z Flip3 and Z Fold3. That being said, the existence of these listings on Digi’s website may suggest that the announcement may take place very soon.

UPDATE (15 Aug / 5:30 PM):

As it turned out, the local pricing of Galaxy Z Flip3 and Z Fold3 has been temporarily shown on Samsung Malaysia’s own website much earlier than the listing on Digi’s site.

Back on Friday, Lowyat.NET Forumer, Daniel.T shared several screenshots from Samsung Malaysia’s website that had listed Z Flip3 128GB and Z Fold3 256GB price as RM3,999 and RM6,699 respectively. Daniel noted that the link to the pricing was found through Google and customers that opted for the Z Flip3 would be provided with Samsung’s e-voucher worth RM 600.

Lowyat.NET Forumer xisan shared this screenshot on Saturday, 14 August at 12:08 AM.

On another hand, those who purchased the Z Fold3 would receive an RM 850 e-voucher instead. These details have since been removed by Samsung and the same also applied to Digi’s website as well.

As mentioned earlier, the existence of these listings can be seen as an indication that we are not far away from the official announcement by Samsung Malaysia itself. So, keep a look ahead.

(Thank you everyone for the tips!)

Here Is The List of Phones and Tablets Under Pakej Peranti RM1 Malaysia Prihatin

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) earlier today has announced that telcos have begun to offer device packages called the Pakej Peranti RM1 Malaysia Prihatin. Timed nicely with the upcoming Merdeka Day, the package aims to provide affordable devices for consumers to upgrade to 4G and VoLTE from as low as RM1.

This is because the 3G network is already on the way out in Malaysia and the full shutdown is expected to take place by the end of this year. The government is planning to reorganise the spectrum used by the 3G network to improve the quality of the country’s 4G services.

Today’s announcement stated that the new package is available from six telcos including Celcom, Digi, Maxis, TM, U Mobile, and YTL (Yes 4G). As you may expect, each of them is offering the RM1 Malaysia Prihatin device package in their own way through different plan options and product line-up.

Immediately after we caught wind of MCMC’s announcement today, we went through the websites of all six telcos and have compiled the information regarding the new package. That led to the list below that we hope could be useful to those who are planning to sign up for it.

CELCOM

According to a promotional poster on Celcom’s website, there are four phones available under the RM1 Malaysia Prihatin device package. However, the phone that you can buy for RM 1 depends on a specific Celcom MEGA postpaid plan which has a rather premium monthly fee.

Here is a simplified list for Celcom:

Lightning M (RM 98/month): vivo Y20 2021, OPPO A54

Lightning M Plus (RM 128/month): vivo Y20s

Lightning L Plus (RM 158/month): vivo Y31

There is also another device that was not featured in the promotional poster but you can see it listed on the telco’s website as shown above: the iPhone 12 mini. This particular phone can be obtained with Lightning XL Pass which costs RM 188 per month.

DIGI

Digi is offering the RM1 Malaysia Prihatin device package as part of its Gemilang Deals. Among phones that is currently being offered by the telco at just RM1 includes the Redmi 9A and Samsung Galaxy A02.

Customers can also choose to get their hands on the Samsung Galaxy A02s instead although it is priced much higher at RM 28. If you want to get your hands on any of these phones with the price that we have mentioned here, you have to pair it with Digi Postpaid 60 plan.

MAXIS

From what we have noticed, Maxis has the biggest selection when it comes to the RM1 Malaysia Prihatin devices to the extent that there are even tablets on the list. That being said though, we believe that some of these devices may have been offered for RM1 prior to the announcement by MCMC today.

Just like Celcom, you also have to be aware that Maxis Postpaid plans have a rather premium monthly fee which ranges from RM 98 up to RM 188. Here is a summary of the listing based on what I have found on Maxis’ website today:

Maxis Postpaid 98

vivo Y20 2021, Samsung Galaxy A02s, realme C21, Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0” (2019).

Maxis Postpaid 128

vivo Y20 2021, Samsung Galaxy A02s, Samsung Galaxy A12, realme C21, realme C25s, OPPO A15s, Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0” (2019), Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite LTE.

Maxis Postpaid 158

vivo Y20 2021, vivo V21e, Samsung Galaxy A02s, Samsung Galaxy A12, Samsung Galaxy A22 5G, Samsung Galaxy A32 5G, OPPO A15s, OPPO Reno5 F, realme C21, realme C25s, realme 8 5G, Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0” (2019), Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite LTE, Lenovo Tab M10 HD (2nd Gen).

Maxis Postpaid 188

vivo Y20 2021, vivo V21e, Samsung Galaxy A02s, Samsung Galaxy A12, Samsung Galaxy A22 5G, Samsung Galaxy A32 5G, OPPO A15s, OPPO Reno5 F, OPPO A74 5G realme C21, realme C25s, realme 8 5G, Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0” (2019), Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite LTE, Lenovo Tab M10 HD (2nd Gen).

Meanwhile, we also noticed that the Hotlink Postpaid 60 plan also offers realme C21 and vivo Y12s for RM1. However, it is not clearly stated whether this offer is officially part of the RM1 Malaysia Prihatin device package.

TM

Even though the company’s name was actually mentioned in MCMC’s announcement, we couldn’t find any reference to RM1 Malaysia Prihatin package on unifi’s website at the time this article was published. We will update this post once we receive more information from TM.

U MOBILE

As opposed to other telcos, U Mobile is the only telco that refers to the package exactly on how MCMC called it. That being said, it is quite possible that some of these devices have already been offered for RM1 (or RM 0.99 in U Mobile’s case) before today’s announcement by the regulator.

At the same time, the device availability also depends on the specific U Mobile’s postpaid plan that you choose:

Giler Unlimited GX68

Vivo Y1s.

Unlimited Hero P79

OPPO A15s.

Unlimited Hero P99

OPPO A15s, OPPO A54, Samsung Galaxy A12.

Unlimited Hero P139

OPPO A15s, OPPO A54, OPPO Reno5 F, Samsung Galaxy A12, Samsung A32 5G, Samsung Galaxy A51.

YES 4G

While other telcos provide plenty of options for their RM1 Malaysia Prihatin device package, Yes 4G offers only one device: Samsung Galaxy A02. This particular option is being paired with its existing Kasi Up Postpaid 49 plan through its Merdeka RM1 Package although it will only be made available to the public on 23 August according to the package’s FAQ document.

Do note that what we have discussed here is just a general outlook of the RM1 Malaysia Prihatin device package. But one thing seemed rather clear: while these devices may be offered at RM1, you still have to consider the telco plans and contract duration associated with them.

Not to forget, some of them may require an upfront fee before you can pick up the offer. As always, please take a look at the in-depth details behind each offering as well as the terms and conditions from respective telcos, so that you know exactly what you are signing up for.

Here Is The List Of All Keluarga Malaysia Youth and Device Telco Packages

The government has officially announced the Keluarga Malaysia telco initiative which provides affordable data and device plans in partnership with major Malaysian telcos. There are two packages to choose from; Pakej Remaja Keluarga Malaysia for teens and university students; and Pakej Peranti Keluarga Malaysia for households to get their hands on affordable 4G devices.

The packages are provided by Celcom, Digi, Maxis, TM, U Mobile, and Yes, so customers will have their pick of the litter. In general, the youth package costs RM30 for three months with a minimum of 20GB while the device package starts at RM40 per month for each device with a choice between 12 and 24-month instalments. For the latter, each NRIC is eligible for a maximum of two devices.

Remember that if you’re over 21 and studying in college or university, you will need to provide a valid student card while those under 21 can just provide their MyKad. Those interested can sign up starting 15 October 2021 until 15 April 2022 with the respective telcos.

All Keluarga Malaysia plans are still eligible for the daily 1GB productivity data. While the passes only last 90 days, you can purchase them again and again for the next six months. There is no limit on how many times you can buy the passes but each individual is limited to only one Keluarga Malaysia line.

Here are the packages available:

Celcom

Celcom is advertising 110GB of data for the Remaja package for only RM30, which is valid for 90 days. Though it’s worth pointing out that in its FAQ page, the plan actually only comes with 20GB but Celcom is including the daily 1GB allocation. It is also named the Pakej Remaja RM30 20GB Pas Internet in said FAQ page.

As for the family device packages, they offer a Nokia 225 4G feature phone for RM38 per month with a 12-month contract and includes 7GB of data for its base package. Budget smartphones are also available for RM58 per month with a 24-month contract with 15GB of monthly data. Available smartphones include a Samsung Galaxy A02, a Samsung Galaxy A03s, a realme C11, a realme C21, an OPPO A15, a Vivo Y1s and a Vivo Y12s.

Digi

Digi Pakej Malaysia

According to a FAQ on Digi’s community forum, the Remaja package is available at RM30 for 90 days with 20GB of data. But it can only be bought through the Touch ‘n Go eWallet app, which will then have to be redeemed on the Digi app.

Digi’s Pakej Peranti Keluarga Malaysia costs RM40 per month with 10GB of data, unlimited calls, and a 24-month contract. For devices, you have a choice of either a Samsung Galaxy A02 or a Redmi 9A.

Maxis/Hotlink

Maxis Hotlink Keluarga Malaysia

For the Remaja package, Hotlink is offering the basic 20GB for RM30, which is valid for 90 days. It also seems that Hotlink is cutting the deal short with an earlier expiry date of 15 March 2022 instead of 15 April.

As for the Keluarga Malaysia devices, you can get one of two devices for RM60 per month bundled with their 30GB Hotlink Postpaid 60 plan, which comes with a 24-month contract. These are the realme C21 and Vivo Y12s. You can also opt to pay an additional RM99 upfront to get the Vivo Y20 instead, or RM199 for either the OPPO A54 or the realme C25s.

TM/Unifi

Unifi is also offering 20GB for RM30, valid for 90 days, and the Pakej Remaja pass can only be purchased through the mobile@unifi app. According to the FAQ, if you’re not already a #BEBAS prepaid subscriber, you’ll first need to purchase a RM10 starter pack.

Unifi’s Pakej Peranti Keluarga Malaysia offers two devices, a Samsung Samsung Galaxy A02 and a vivo Y12s. Both devices cost RM79 per month and include unlimited calls, texts, and data with a 24-month contract. But you’ll have to already be an unifi Broadband subscriber to be eligible.

U Mobile

U mobile pakej malaysia

U Mobile’s KM30 Remaja plan is offering the standard 20GB for RM30. But similar to Celcom, they are advertising 110GB by including the daily 1GB data.

As for the telco’s Keluarga Malaysia device package, there’s only one device on offer, and it’s the Samsung Galaxy A02. The package itself costs RM40 per month for 5GB of monthly data and a 12-month contract. You also get 50 minutes’ worth of calls every month to all networks.

Yes

At the time of writing, Yes 4G has not posted their Keluarga Malaysia packages yet. We’ll update this section when the telco makes its plans available. That being said, it’s probably safe to expect something similar to what the other telcos are offering.

In terms of the data quota, the offerings provided by the telco matched what the government has announced to the public. When it comes to devices, there is indeed some variety but all of them are entry-level models which are not exactly surprising to see given the intention behind the Keluarga Malaysia telco package as well as their pricing.

All in all, both the Pakej Remaja Keluarga Malaysia and Pakej Peranti Keluarga Malaysia offers something for everyone. That being said, we reckon that your choice will likely come down to which telco you are already subscribed to.

Get The Best Mobile Internet Experience With Digi

The local telco market is a competitive one, even if the number of major players aren’t especially huge. As such, it can be difficult to pick a service provider if you haven’t already signed up with one. And usually, once you do, it takes a lot to get someone to move to another service.

But if you haven’t already picked a mobile internet service provider, you’re likely still looking for one that is not only the fastest, but also the most consistent. In that case, you may consider pitching in with Team Yellow, Digi. Because this telco actually has the accolades from third party network benchmarks to prove it.

Crowned most consistent

As mentioned, anyone looking to get a new mobile internet service provider will likely have consistency as a major concern. But on that front, there’s nothing to worry about. This is because Ookla, the company behind Speedtest.net, has rated Digi as the most consistent mobile operator throughout the entirety of 2020.

https://www.lowyat.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Internet-Streaming.jpg

This is plenty impressive on its own, but it’s worth remembering that Malaysia entered its first and strictest Movement Control Order (MCO) last year as well. And it was a period of time when mobile data use was increasing. No surprise, as a fair share of people were working from home during that period of time.

It’s not all past accolades only either. OpenSignal also rated Digi as providing the best video experience in KL, Selangor, Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Perak, Penang, Terengganu and Sarawak, between the months of June and August this year. Specifically for video calls, OpenSignal also puts Digi as being the telco that provides the best experience for the quarter before, that is between February and May of 2021. And it would be difficult, to say the least, to be rated the telco that gives the best video experience without consistency in internet connectivity.

Why is this important? Simply because a consistent internet connection means that you get what you want, when you want. Need information on a specific topic? Type it into the search bar, hit enter and you get your search results with minimal wait time.

For videos, this means watching one in its entirety without having to deal with the annoying buffering circle. This is especially the case if you’re looking for something specific within a specific video, as you can jump to the point in question, and get the video playing immediately without having to wait.

Consistently quick too

Of course, consistency has to come with speed, and you’ll be glad to know that Digi is not lacking in that department either. In fact, aside from being the most consistent in 2020, Ookla has also rated Digi as the fastest mobile operator throughout the second half of 2020.

For more recent figures, we go back to OpenSignal, which reports that between the months of June and August of this year, Digi is rated as the telco that provides the best download speed experience. And while OpenSignal does not have a report for the months of March, April and May, the mobile analytics company says that Digi provided the best download speeds between December 2020 and February 2021 as well.

The reason for why speed is important should be self explanatory. After all, consistency loses its significance if it means that you’re only getting a constant trickle of data. Going back to videos as the easy example, even with a reliable, consistent connection, it doesn’t mean much if it’s not fast enough to get rid of the buffering circle.

Many jobs these days are no longer strictly of the text variety. Often, they involve multimedia, ranging from videos, audio clips or just straight up images in bulk. And if you’re working away from your office network and the home broadband setup, you’ll need a speedy mobile internet connection to get you all the files you need in the least amount of time.

And you can’t really do something else while waiting if it also involves getting things off the internet like streaming off of Spotify or Netflix, as it just competes with your work file downloads. That is, unless your internet connection speed is fast enough, allowing you to do both without negatively impacting either.

Here’s how to get started

If you like what you see, then you may be interested to see what Digi has to offer. There’s a wide range of prepaid and postpaid plans that you can choose from, depending on your exact needs. And they start from as low as RM15 a month.

Digi’s Upcoming System Migration Will Temporarily Limit Customer’s Speed To 5Mbps

Digi has recently revealed that it will perform a system migration this coming Monday, 25 October. The implementation will affect all of the telco’s subscribers but the exact impact does depend on the service that each customer subscribes.

For example, the Internet speed for postpaid, prepaid, and mobile broadband customers will be capped to 5Mbps starting from 11:30 PM on 25 October until 9:30 AM the following day. For VoLTE and VoWiFi services, they will be inaccessible much earlier though at 9:00 PM on 25 October.

Wi-Fi Calling (VoWiFi) setting for iPhone.

Meanwhile, any of the telco’s self-service channels such as MyDigi, Digi Store Online, and EasyAdd as well as UMB menu and physical kiosks will also not be accessible during the system migration. The same also applies to the telco’s bill payment and prepaid reload services.

Digi noted that the system migration will bring some changes to some elements of their services including Internet rollover, Internet sharing, and Internet quota. For the full list of changes, you can check them out through Digi’s knowledge base source link that we have listed below.

Certain Digi Customers Are Currently Experiencing Connectivity Issues (UPDATED)

UPDATE (7:00 PM): Digi has released a media statement to address the issue. Scroll further below to check it out.

ORIGINAL STORY (2:55 PM):

Some Digi users may be facing difficulties with their Internet connection according to a notice that the telco had put up on its website this morning. The telco didn’t provide much detail inside the notice although there is already a significant number of complaints on social media regarding this issue.

A quick search on Twitter using “digi problem” as the keyword at 1:47 PM today brought us to this view:

Furthermore, the telco has received plenty of angry comments when it put up a notice regarding the connectivity issue on its Facebook page at 12:57 PM today:

From these social media postings, some of the customers have noted that they were experiencing connection problems for quite a while and a number of them have even experienced it for the past two to three days. It is unclear whether the connection issue was caused by the system migration that the telco had performed earlier this week, but we do have some suspicion though.

In our previous report, we have noted that customers’ speed would be capped to 5Mbps and they were not able to access certain services including the MyDigi app and website during the migration process. However, we have noticed that the reference to the 5Mbps speed cap has since been erased from Digi’s FAQ document which is rather baffling.

Not only that, details regarding the migration period were also missing. Just look at the comparison below:

The original announcement (L) vs the revised version (R) that is on Digi’s website, as of 27 October at 2:45 PM.

In the same notice that Digi had posted on its website this morning, the telco stated that MyDigi as well as its payment channels are still not inaccessible by users. Hence, it seemed the system migration may not have gone as smoothly as planned.

Meanwhile, the telco did not provide any estimated recovery time so far. We will keep you posted if we receive any updates regarding this issue, so stay tuned.

UPDATE (7:00 PM):

Digi has sent out an official statemember to the media in regards to the connectivity issue that have been plaguing some Digi customers:

On 22 October, we had informed our customers on a planned system migration taking place from 25 to 26 October, that may affect several services for a short period of time.

We regret that due to some unforeseen complications, there has been a delay in restoring some of these services. Some of our customers may be experiencing intermittent internet connectivity. Our teams are working on restoring these services as soon as possible, and we will provide more updates in due course. In the meantime, we have listed some alternatives on our website www.digi.com.my for affected customers.

We humbly apologise for any inconvenience caused, and thank all customers for their patience and understanding.

As noted in the announcement above, the telco still not able to estimate the recovery time for this issue. So, whatever problem that Digi is trying to rectify at the moment, seems like it is a major one this time around.

We will continue to update this story once we receive further updates from the telco.
